How to say goodbye in Spanish

How to say farewell in Spanish?

There are different ways to say goodbye in Spanish, it all depends on the context and the circumstances. Few days ago I explained to you the difference between hola and buenos días, today we will discover some expressions we use to say farewell in the Spanish language.

Nine ways to say goodbye in Spanish

Adiós

Is the most generic expression to say farewell. Its English equivalent is goodbye. Very often Spanish people tend to say Adiós, hasta luego which we could translate as Bye, see you soon.

Hasta luego

The English translation is see you soon. Hasta luego is less formal than adiós, however, as mentioned above, you can perfectly mix those two expressions to sound like a native Spanish speaker.

Nos vemos

Literally translated as “we see each other” it’s a smart and quick way to say something when you’re leaving. Just in case you get bored of “hasta luego”. Although, you can mix nos vemos and hasta luego as well.

Hasta la próxima

If you know that you will see someone again and quite soon, why not use this cheerful expression which means *until next time?

Hasta pronto

We will use this one when we know that we will most probably see someone again but not in the immediate future. A good English equivalent is see you later.

Hasta ahora

Here’s a good example: Imagine that while you are talking to your flatmate, you start feeling like you need to smoke. There is no tobacco left so you have to go outside to buy it. You’ll be back in five minutes, that’s why you say to your flatmate hasta ahora (in English see you in a minute).

Hasta mañana

See you tomorrow! - that’s what we usually say to our workmates or friends if you know you will see them tomorrow. ¡Hasta mañana! or ¡nos vemos mañana! are good phrases to use.

Hasta el martes (or whatever day of the week you like)

If you know that you will see someone on a specific day of the week and want to say it in Spanish, just use the word hasta and then add the article el and the day.

¡Cuídate! ¡Que te vaya bien! ¡Que descanses!

Besides the static expressions, depending on the circumstances, we can also use other constructions to express our feelings or wishes.

The most popular of them are:

¡Cuídate! - Take care ¡Que vaya bien! - I hope everything goes well ¡Mucha suerte! ¡Buena suerte! - Good luck! ¡Que descanses! - Sleep well

All of them are quite informal, but at the same time, cute, especially if you care about someone. If you want to create your own phrases like these, just remember that the majority of them require a use of the subjunctive mode.

Did you know?

Que means many things in Spanish. Sometimes it requires a graphical accent, sometimes not. What’s the difference? When should you put the accent on que? The answer is right here.
