How to conjugate verbs like gustar

What’s the difference between gustar and other Spanish verbs?

Gustar is one of the most important Spanish verbs. Since day one it’s vital to know how to express likes and dislikes, this is why most teachers tend to introduce it as soon as possible. However, because of its peculiar structure, the verb “gustar” seems very strange at the beginning. You have to add in some bizarre pronouns and it doesn’t conjugate like “hablar” for instance.

Now, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that below you’ll find a good explanation of how to conjugate and how to use the verb “gustar”. The bad news is that there are more gustar-like verbs, but I can assure you they are all nice and you won’t hate them just for being different, ok?

Two important things you should know about the verbs like gustar

1)They agree with nouns or pronouns that appear after them. Like in the examples below:

A mí me gusta la música

A mí me gustan las cerezas

A mí me gustas tú

2) We should also use some special pronouns:

yo --> (a mí) me gusta

tú --> (a ti) te gusta

él --> (a él) le gusta

ella --> (a ella) le gusta

usted --> (a usted) le gusta

nosotros --> (a nosotros) nos gusta

vosotros --> (a vosotros) os gusta

ellos --> (a ellos) les gusta

ellas --> (a ellas) les gusta

ustedes --> (a ustedes) les gusta

In some cases, especially in spoken language, we skip those complex pronouns, so you can perfectly say “me gusta esta falda” (I like this skirt) instead of “a mí me gusta esta falda”. That’s why I’ve put them in brackets.
